Initially an informal meeting is arranged between the coach and executive to check personal chemistry. Following a decision to proceed and an engagement agreement, background work is undertaken to get to know the executive including, if appropriate, soundings from others in the organisation.

Goals are agreed for the coaching assignment. Typically a coaching agreement is for a period of six months to a year. Usually an all-inclusive package is proposed which means the executive has as much access to the coach as wanted in the period agreed. This will involve face to face sessions of up to two hours each and would also include availability by telephone or email at any other time. This means support is available as it is needed – perhaps before a vital meeting. This additional contact is an important part of the support.
